JDO RAW 2021

Design graduate wins posthumous award

Cameron Day, a graphic design graduate from Denby Village in Derbyshire who tragically died from a Covid-related illness in August, has been named the winner of JDO RAW 2021.

A national design competition run by JDO, a leading brand, design and innovation agency, JDO RAW was established in 2013 to recognise and support the very best new design talent in the UK.

“Cameron’s submission really stood out and he was chosen as the winner before we knew he was unwell with Covid,” said JDO Principal and Group Creative Director, Ben Oates.

“This award is testament to his exceptional talent and a creative spirit that shone bright. Our heart goes out to his family and his friends at this most difficult of times.”

A  graphic design student at the University of Lincoln, Cameron graduated this year with the highest distinction - a First Class Honours degree.

“Cameron was an extremely talented student with huge potential and we are all devastated by his loss,” says, Jo Mansfield and Rhona Breeze-Lawlor, Lecturers at the University of Lincoln. “This award will exist as a tribute to his immense talent”.

The students who entered JDO RAW this year were set a brief asking them to ‘take an everyday item and make it stand out from the crowd’. Cameron chose to create a drain unblocking product – giving it the brand name ‘Plunge’ and delivering a really compelling piece of work with visual cues taken from pipework components.

Cameron’s prize money will be donated to his JustGiving page set up by his sister (link below) and the winner’s trophy will be awarded to his lecturers to take pride of place at Lincoln University.

“It would have meant the world to Cameron to win this award,” said Cameron’s family. “We are so proud of him and everything he achieved”.
